The Wadden islands consist of Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Texel is the biggest island of the Wadden islands. It is 25 km long, and surrounded by lots of nature. It has 7 small villages spread out over the island, and it is also known as “sheep island!” There are as many sheep as people on the island. Today I want to share 5 reasons why you should visit Texel with your children.

If you are in The Netherlands and you want to discover something different and relax, then you should keep reading. Here are “five reasons you should visit Texel”
1. Pet Lambs at the Sheep Farm
Texel is known as a sheep island because it has as many sheep as inhabitants. Wherever you go you can observe fields with sheep strolling around. At the Sheep Farm in Texel you can pet lambs all through the year and not just in the Spring time. Younger kids will love this farm. They can play outside, ride on rides, pet animals, learn all about different breeds of sheep, watch a sheepdog show and so much more. I do recommend to wear old shoes or boots because … well the chickens walk all over the property so you can imagine… Our kids had such a great time here.

2. Visit Tulip Fields
People might not know, but you can definitely visit tulip fields in Texel. One big plus is that it is not crowded here and you can have the whole field to yourself! Of course this is in the Spring time so keep that in mind.

3. Beautiful Beaches
Texel has gorgeous beaches with light sand. When we were there it was a bit of a windy day (also half cloudy and rainy) but it still was fun to walk on the beach. You can walk the beaches, have a drink at one of the beach restaurants, or if it’s warm weather go for a swim or sunbath of course.

4. Climb the Lighthouse
At the east side of the island you will find the Lighthouse. Get a nice view from the top of the Lighthouse. Children younger than 4 years old go for free and you do have to buy a ticket in advance.

5. Observe Seals
In the Ecomare you can see seals up close. They are fed at 11.00 and 3 ‘o clock so keep that in mind. We didn’t manage to go visit but it will stay on the list for another time. I know the kids would love to see them up close (and me too!) There is also a whale room, a bird sanctuary and a sea aquarium to explore.

There are actually many more reasons to go and visit Texel. I was surprised myself at how much there is to do on this little island. We went for a day and had a lot of fun. The ferry from Den Helder only takes about 20 minutes so you are there before you know it. If you want to get more ideas of what to do in The Netherlands then check this out.
